"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. ”
-Pablo Picasso
Everyone Can Understand And Make Art
Kids taking great joy in drawing, painting and building structures. They believe in their creations and patiently explain them to anyone foolish enough to ask,
”What’s that supposed to be?”
Yet, all too soon too many children lose this belief in their artistic abilities, and begin to think that art only belongs in exclusive museums and galleries. They give up something that brings them happiness and self-expression, because they begin to feel that they are not "real artists".
Art Is Inspiring
My job as an art teacher is to provide my students with the essential tools for understanding
and making art throughout their lives. If art is a mystery, then my students and I are detectives,
cracking the visual codes together. We canvas our lives and all kinds of art for evidence and
information. We observe our environments, which are jam-packed with imagery. Clouds in the
sky; graffiti; coffee cups; all of these visual fragments make up our daily lives and also inspired
artists like Renee Magritte, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Elizabeth Murray. As an art teacher, I
make these connections and encourage my students to think like artists. Like those artists we
can also take inspiration from the complex visual world around us.
Art Is A Discipline
In order to realize their artistic ideas, students need to plan, problem-solve and practice. Developing any skill takes patience and persistence. Art is no different. My lessons are designed in a series of steps that set students up for success. Making mistakes and experimenting are part of the process because they encourage creative thinking. Taking time to think, explore, strategize and practice leads to
innovative and original art.
Art Is Empowering
By learning how to successfully execute their artistic ideas students are empowered. They learn that reaching a goal can be a fun and challenging process. Most importantly, they can have a positive impact on the world around them.
